企画を立ち上げて以来、地元の新聞、雑誌、テレビなどにも多く取材をいただきました。
先日は持続可能性(サステナビリティ)の必要性を追求、研究している大学教授からも連絡がありました。

平凡な一家族が都会から田舎に移り、野菜、果物を育てフードビジネスをはじめゆっくりと一歩ずつ築いてきました。先日こんな記事を見つけました。

”健全な食品と農業のためにローカルな食料システムを　米科学者と国連報告官”

  アメリカの”憂慮する科学者同盟”（ Union of Concerned Scientists,UCS）が2012年2月29日、アメリカ農業法の5年ごとの改訂は、ジャンク・フードを助成し、また有害な農業慣行を奨励する農業政策を健全な食品と農業を優先する政策に置き換える機会とすべきだという政策提言を行った。
　
　

現在の食料システムは化石燃料、農薬、化学肥料に完全に依存しており、いつまでも続けられない。いまや、ジャンク・フード支援をやめ、環境を保護する農法を利用して健康的な食品を作る農家をこそ助成すべきときだ。

　提言は、栄養に富む多種の食品を作る一方、大衆の健康や環境を害さない農業方法を採用する農家を奨励せねばならない、一番いいやり方は、野菜・果実作りを奨励し、ファーマーズ・マーケット、フードハブ、コミュニティ支援農業プログラムを含むローカルな食料システムへの投資を増やすことだと言う。

世界中で同じことが起こっていると思います。ここオーストラリアでも同じです。

都会から田舎へ移住し半農半xの夢を実現しました。

そして今、半農半xの生活から１００％農的暮らしを実現させるのが私たちの夢です。

ナナグレンはオーストラリアニューサウスウェルズ州にあります。俳優ラッセルクロウが住んでいることでも有名です。シドニーから車で北へ６時間、バイロンベイからは車で南へ２時間半の位置にあります。

そのナナグレンにローカルフードハブ(地元食品販売店)を立ち上げるための支援をお願いしたいのです。

皆様の支援がその夢実現をかなえてくれます。そしてその報酬金額に応じて、食品や商品を購入できるバウチャー、フードボックスや、オリジナルバッグ、Tシャツなどを渡しいたします。

私たち、シンクロニシティーファームのオーナー（ジョシュアと智子）はお客様、支援者、地元の生産者やパーマカルチャリストとのつながりを持ち関係を強化していきたいと思っています。

この２年間地元のマーケットで食品を販売してきました。私たちの農場でできた野菜、果物と地元の食品とあわせて、お客様のニーズに合わせるため１００マイル地域外からの野菜、果物も仕入れて販売していますが、今後は地元１００マイル地域内の食品のみを取り扱い、フードマイルを削減し、‘顧客と生産者の約束’を果たすため、長期にわたり専念していく準備もできています。

その約束とは、新鮮で、栄養、質の高い食品を生産、調達し、無農薬、有機農業、旬の地産物を求める方たちに販売を続けていくことです。

現在、過去、未来のお客様に私たちから食品を事前購入していただき、援助していただいた資金で清潔でプロフェッショナルなお店を創りたいと思っております。

ご支援いただいた金額以上の報酬を２０１４年早期、開店次第ご利用いただけます。

このプロジェクトの資金集めにクラウドファンディングを利用した理由は、同じ考えを持った人達が私達のしていることに興味をもち、シンクロニシティーファームの成功に早い時期から直接関わっていただくことで一緒にいろいろな体験、経験を長年にわたりシェアしていきたいと思ったからです。

これまでのお話

２００８年４月、シドニーからここナナグレン　３３エーカー（約１万２千坪）の土地に引っ越してきました。

もともとガーデニングが上手で料理が大好きなジョシュアと、自然とともに子育てをしたい！と願う智子が、都会を離れ田舎での生活を始めたのです。
 

パーマカルチャーデザインコースをメルボルン、TrinityCollegeで修了させ、持続可能な土地活用、自給自足を目指し、２００８年４月からサラダガーデン、ハーブガーデン、マーケットガーデン、果樹園を作り続けています。
 

家畜も、鶏、シルキー、アヒル、七面鳥、ほろほろ鳥、羊と徐々に増やしていき、自分たちで大切に育てた鶏、アヒル、七面鳥もさばけるようになりました。新鮮な卵はマーケットで販売し好評を得ております。

 

水は１００％雨水を使用。お湯はソーラーパネルを使用しています。

都会暮らしから田舎暮らしへの転換はそれほど簡単なものではありませんでしたが、５年たった今、心からよかったと思える生活を送っています。
 

２０１１年２月、毎日大量に取れる白ナスを卸し始め、おくら、サトイモ、かぼちゃ、赤と白のストライプビートルートなど、オーストラリアでは珍しい野菜を主に作り、地元の方に卸し始めました。
 

そして、２０１２年１月、ある友人がマーケットで売ればいいのにと。その一言で私達のマーケットビジネスは始まりました。

 

毎週日曜日コフスハーバーのハーバーサイドマーケットで野菜を売ることになりました。

日本の野菜や赤紫蘇ジュース、昔ながらの種から育てた野菜などを販売し始め２年がたちました。
そして去年の１１月から地元ナナグレンのジェネラルストアの前でも毎週土曜日お店を出し始めました。
 

現在多くのお客様から支持され、リピーターもどんどん増えています。同時に地元の農家、ガーデナーの方から、自分たちの野菜を売ってほしいとの申し入れも増え、私達、お客様、生産者皆様が喜んでいただける場所になっています。

 

販売しながら私達が学んだことは、多くの方々が、さまざまな健康状態にあり、特別な食品、ダイエットが必要であること、特に農薬に関してはとても気を使われているので、無農薬、有機野菜の必要性を強く感じております。
 

また、生産者の方々も、家の前で売る“無人販売”をされていますが、お金を払わず、商品を取られることが頻繁にあるそうです。またせっかくそだてた野菜が育ちすぎて無駄になることが多く、それでも生産を一時中止することもできず困っていたのでうれしいとのコメントもたくさんいただきました。
 

都会から田舎へ引越し自分たちで野菜を育てたい方々が増えてきています。
 

しかし、農作業は時間も手間もお金もかかります。せっかく育てた野菜も友人、ご近所にあげ続けるのはすばらしいことですが、子育てをしながら、フルタイムで働き野菜を育てていくのにも限界が出てきます。かと言って自分たちで売りに行くのも大変です。
 

そんな方たちに私たちのお店が少しでも役に立ち、お客様からも喜ばれていただける場所を提供し続けていけたらという思いでいっぱいです。
 

この思いを実現させるために、クールルーム（冷蔵室）と、店舗をファームにインストールする必要に迫られています。

この２年間でファーストクラスの食品を生産、供給、販売に成功してきました。そして今後も長期にわたり続けてまいります。

Finally.... Back to Paradise.

All I can say today is that I am pleased it is Friday and that coming home the 20 minute drive through the Orara Vally to the farm was a real pleasure. Its been a full on week with a large mix of clients but along with some good sales, it was one of those weeks where I was mostly doing things that needed my attention but wasn't making enough money.

Well, I am now enjoying a glass of wine, having had a lovely dinner up at Mum & Larry's place and then came home and before the light faded, dug a little more of the base of Jasper's Sandpit and then covered it with shade cloth to be pegged down in preparation for tomorrow, the Inaugural Official Sand Pouring. (Smooth White Bush Sand free of salt or chemicals........a kids dream)....... one thing I did learn in the process of building this sandpit was that it will definitely need a cover, as before I had even finished the cats had obviously thought to themselves "Wow a big kitty litter"..... boy are they wrong. So I have this vision for a 2 door lid that is securly hinged to each side and when they open up they will make 2 great ramps for playing on as well as making sure that there are some air gaps to allow sand to dry out.....beautiful.

This weekend is also set to be a busy one with a fair bit of mowing on the tractor and the ride on, working my way around the large dam and the fence lines around the centre of the property. I must say that those times out there in the breeze with the sun I really enjoy the time to think and also the privilege of being able to get to know every square metre of the property personally.

I checked on the trees planted in the orchard this afternoon and about 80% of the Tagasaste that we planted is doing well which is good. They will grow into great big bushes 3-5m tall and they both bring bees in because of white fragrant flowers but also make wonderful forage for cows, pigs, chickens, goats and so on as well as being great for coppicing as firewood. The tree seedlings we planted a few weeks ago have virtually all come up now, including much more of the Tagasaste, Carob, Pidgeon Pea and some Acacia which will mostly all be ready to plant as we get closer to Autumn when it will be cooler and the little trees will manage to get settled better in the "Big World" of the orchard. I also saw some Red Cedar and Silky Oaks that someone was selling along the Pacific Highway for $1.5o each for developed seedlings about 50cm tall so I have some of those to plant this weekend as they are ready to go in. One of the things that I really must do is have the gentleman that helps in planning irrigation systems come round so I can consult with him about all the different systems I want to put in because hand watering has now become too big a job. (I had to build a makeshift mobile watering mobile with a tank on the back of the ute and a 5m hose coming off that gravity feeding and driving around the orchard) however because the trees are planted fairly close together in sun pockets facing north it is hard to get in and around them....... however..... anything for the trees. ( I have a vision of the future where instead of when we arrived to cleared paddocks, we will soon be walking around our own private food forest and sitting under the trees in our espaliered apple tree circle or walking along the pathway to the large dam, over to duck island and then casting a line into our dam filled with fish while sitting under the shade of a big old tree.)

I am also going around to see a friend who is a great excavator and run through the planning I have done for the completion of the roadway running from Orara Way right through to the house and around the driveway and then along to the stables as well as doing inside the large farm shed. Its a major project that also involved electrician putting lights down the driveway and out to the road where the farm sign is and then lighting in the large shed. Another bloke is going to install 3 automatic shed roller doors.... I can see it now...... all machinery, tractor, tools, wood and all manner of paraphernalia perfectly stored to enable maximum productivity and access. I also have a plan to build a 10 metre workbench using railway sleepers as heavy set legs and a large wide benchtop that will mean we can really lay out the projects we are working on and I will have enough space to set power tools permanently in place.....and now to dream (I can imagine one day having a second level built into the shed and the upstairs area being turned into the farm office and library complete with fridge and pool table and windows looking out over the farm, couches and air conditioning...... oh yeah)

We are back and going hard

OK... here we are. Its been a long while since I started updating our blog and so to be back here writing is a rare opportunity because being up on the farm we have been involved in a great many projects that have taken priority over computer time.

Just for a quick list, here are the things we have achieved over the past 6 months (In addition to working full time for the NAB and traveling weekly between Byron and Foster along the east coast);

• Built a 200 square meter vegetable garden that we are eating beautiful food from daily
• Repaired my classic 1968 tractor and got it working like new
  
• Created a herb spiral with sandstone and compost and planted it out
• Planted about 150 trees in our new orchard
• Collected massive piles of old wood from the farm and built bonfires ready for winter
• Consulted with specialised dam builder to expand our large dam and help us to build Duck Island
  
• Mowed 33 acres with the tractor and ride on mower (4 times)
• Started the deconstruction of our old horse stables to convert to glasshouse and chook house
• Hired an drove a 1 tonne excavator and worked on our road and big farm shed
• Did lots of Landcare work down in front of our river clearing camphorloral and privet
• Built Jasper the most immaculate sandpit to play in
• Installed our rain gauge
  
• Planned the designs and sourced the supports for our farm sign
• Developed the farm maintenance schedule to care for all equipment
• Made up 300 litres of my special fertiliser (Water, Seaweed, Comfrey, Cow Manure)
• Dug a massive hole the size of a swimming pool in the area just behind the house becoming a Japanese pond
  
• Started to manicure the trees all around the house to be cleaner and look appealing
• Placed 25 Aerial layers in the existing fruit trees to be able to multiply the trees
• Planted about 1000 new tree seeds in special trays to be planted in Autumn
• Did a deal with a local neighbour and horse lover to collect trailer loads of manure
• Started documenting more of our Permaculture plan to become clearer about priorities

There is just so much more however I am going to resolve to just keep things updated from now as we go along.

City Lights

Here I am in the dazzling city lights of Sydney, ideally characterised by the fact that I was sitting in the plane on the runway for about 40 minutes, followed by 400 people waiting almost 30 minutes to get our bags. When I saw the queue for the taxis that was a mile long, I thought I would be smart and cut through the car park to the Qantas side of the terminals and catch a taxi there, only to find the same situation. Within 60 seconds of standing near to the long line stretching into the horizon of people waiting for taxis I decided it was time to act differently and speaking loudly I asked if anyone else who may be going over to the north would be interested in catching one of the limousines that are always scalping for fares near the exit from baggage claim. A good gentleman stepped forward and said he was going that way and within 5 minutes we were in a comfortable car heading north....... now here at Troy and Robs place, having enjoyed gourmet hot dogs and wine.....

It is interesting being away from the place that I now call home in the beautiful Orara valley while now being only kilometres from many of the houses that I used to call my home.

What is one's home? Is it the place that most of your things are stored? or is it the place where you spend most of your time? or is it the place where all your memories are stored?

I think that all of the stages in our lives are special and now that we are on this new journey, in a new place, I think I have found a home that will fulfill a dream and create an existence that is in line with the times gone past and a more comfortable and natural way of achieving the basic and even the more complex range of human needs for both survival and true happiness and richness of ones life......very good.

Final Frontier in Sydney

Well, today is the last day of working remotely on the farm for FCC as I will be travelling down to Sydney later today to spend time on Thursday and Friday with my collegues providing as comprehensive handover as I can to assist them wherever possible.

I am also looking forward to catching up with friends and family there to be able to share some time and also to see Sydney after having not been there for over 6 weeks (the longest I have been away since I was born.)

Out the front, the good man, peter is mixing up the cement for the supports of the retaining wall for the garden and it is going to look absolutely fantastic, especially when all the rest of the dark black organic soil goes back into the ground and gets covered with the mountains of mulch we are developing. I still need to have George the Excavator Guy back to pull out the old wysteria (keeping it intact) and helping to move it out to a far more wysteria friendly environment due to the ferocity and vigour that the roots exhibit.... and then with that done the wall can be finished along the front, along with th e digging and setting of about another 40 posts to hold chicken wire that will ultimately keep the rabbits and other creatures out of the garden (which they will certainly want to get into when they see the wonderful greens and vegetables growing inside)

Other things that will be arranged later today is the final installation of our UV Light Filter and very fine chemical filter for the water which ensures that the already pristine rainwater is then purified further by any bacteria that has joined the water via tanks or pipes or gutter and roof (however because they are all new it is as clean as a whistle)

I am looking forward to my Birthday next Tuesday 3rd June which will be preceded by the picking up of our new vehicle on Saturday which is exciting in itself but is also particularly wicked because its a beautiful Toyota Hilux SR 4x4 3l Turbo Diesel.....photos to come soon.

So.... with a few teleconferences out of the way, and the packing done for Sydney, I just need to do some more work for the handover in Sydney and all will be well.

Future Scenarios

I finished reading a very powerful website in totality this morning www.futurescenarios.org which is an essay by David Holmgren that has really hit home for me and really provided a clear framework on which to integrate all of the media and information and talk that is being bandied around lately about a whole range of topics that will effect human kind more than most people realise.

It las left me feeling both proud and confident that in educating ourselves, making the decision to change our life's path and then taking the first bold step by moving out of the city and centering our life around a very different set of values that we are becoming well placed to deal with any one of the 4 potential future scenarios that will become the reality for this world as we know it and the thing that we currently call civilisation.

What particularly impressed me was the fact that this essay covers all of the various attitudes of people that I have spoken with and listened to intently, while providing factual observations that ensure that everyone, from the most basic thinker to the most studious intellectual will sit up and hear and then hopefully feel empowered to act upon.

After studying Permaculture with Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton both in their courses as well as through their writings as well as through the writings of David Holmgren, I am now focussed firmly on our all encompassing mission to design and construct not only the physical framework of our new lifestyle, but also to reallign our mental state and emotional response to the new world reality that emerges.........

...... whichever world that is.

Trading Skills and Using Time

I woke up this morning at about 5am with Jaspers foot sitting on my face, no covers on, cold and with a sort throat ..... not a nice way to start the day however after a nice hot bath and a cup of tea, warm clothes on and sheepskin boots I felt somewhat human again.

With work outside continuing on the garden, I decided to start my business work day at 6am and get 3 hours of thinking done before 9am so that I would have some breathing space when Peter arrived. By the time he got here I had finished my planning of a 2 day sales handover discussion that captured the flavour of what I wanted to pass on to my collegue.

So... my mission was to cut the 6 x 2.4m posts into 12 precice halves and then cut wooden stakes to hold them in place while concrete would be poured around them to form the strong wall between the garden and the house. That done, I was back inside and continuing my work through until 11.30 when I had a call from Lindy, our neighbour and also our lawyer who needed some help unloading about 50 hay bales....well I would go to the end of the world and back for Lindy, so I threw on my rigging gloves and was over there helping to achieve that in about half an hour flat, covered in sweat and feeling pretty good......

Now... back to work before we have a beautiful lunch outside of smoked trout, salad and fresh bread...... love that!
